Individual Counseling
We all want to feel happy, care for and connect with others, and find satisfaction in our work and creative endeavors. It's hard to understand why, despite our best intentions, we find ourselves making poor decisions or even actively harming ourselves. Issues like addictions, post traumatic stress, lack of harmonious relationships, depression, anxiety, and parenting difficulties, are discouraging and confusing when it seems like we are trying our hardest to be healthy people.
I start from the premise that all of our painful and dysfunctional behaviors and thought patterns developed for a reason. They did not arise to torment us.They came into existence to protect us from painful or overwhelming experiences in our past. These experiences range from the obvious, such as major traumas, to the subtle, such as not feeling valued or listened to in our families or cultures of origin.
I often use a therapeutic method called Internal Family Systems which helps people learn to relate to themselves differently. Internal family systems starts with the premise that we all have multiple parts inside of us and sometimes they are in conflict with our intentions to live and happy and meaningful life.
For example, many people have a self-critical voice in their head or find themselves behaving in ways that do not match their values or make no sense based on their life goals. Where does this critical voice come from? Why are we in conflict with ourselves? Internal Family Systems answers these questions in intriguing and ultimately life changing ways. The key is learning to tune into something called "the Self" with a capital "S". The Self is nonjudgmental, curious, compassionate, and calm. From this calm place an internal dialogue can be started with the aspects of our personalities we find troubling.
I am also trained as an Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing practitioner. EMDR is a well-researched trauma reduction technique that is very effective in taking the charge out of memories that are distressing or disturbing.
I have been working as a psychotherapist for the last twenty-five year and I continue to learn both inside and outside the classroom. Because of my extensive experience I do not have a one size fits all model and I am open to feedback if something in our sessions is not working for you. My goal is to collaborate with my clients. I am passionate about the healing process and believe it is everyone’s birthright to have a fulfilling life!
Couples Counseling
Our relationships reflect our mental health. When we are disconnected from those we love, or do not know how to communicate effectively, we may struggle with depression, anxiety, addictions, or just a feeling of aching loneliness. I am an advanced practitioner of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. EFT is a research validated method in which partners learn to identify harmful and entrenched patterns within their marriage and develop the skills to engage in a new way.
Your relationship may be highly conflictual or feel like an emotional desert where connection disappeared a long time ago. An example of a common pattern that interferes with intimacy starts with two different coping strategies. One partner pushes hard for communication in order to resolve perceived problems. The other tries not to bring up difficult issues for fear that it will further drive a wedge in the relationship. As this dance gets more entrenched we can start seeing our partner as a problem not a person and the relationship, once a safe haven, becomes a battleground.
EFT helps couples
-
Become mindful of entrenched patterns in their relationship that run below the surface of awareness.
-
Facilitate a much deeper conversation between the couple where these unrecognized patterns are unearthed and talked about in a loving way.
-
Understand how childhood experiences are interfering with your current relationship.
-
Heal from painful issues such as affairs, differences in sexual desire, and addictions.
I have been providing individual, couple, and family therapy for the last twenty-five years.
I received my Masters degree from Bastyr University in 1995 in Applied Behavioral Sciences. After a post graduate internship and seven years of additional consultation I received licensure from the State of Washington. My areas of expertise include couples counseling, anxiety and depression, struggles with addiction, childhood abuse and trauma, relationships, parenting difficulties, and finding direction and meaning in a challenging world.
I have been trained in a number of therapeutic modalities and we will work together to determine which type of treatment is best for you. I am an empathetic and compassionate listener and I will help clarify the specific goals that will help you create a happier life.
In my teens and twenties, I struggled with and overcame an addiction that was very destructive. I know what it is like to suffer from mental health issues and also how to find the courage to overcome these issues and have a happy life.
Besides my training in psychotherapy, I was a Seattle firefighter and EMT for thirteen years and have witnessed and assisted in a wide array of emergency situations. I am the parent of two college age sons, and I have spent a great deal of time learning how to be a better parent and helping others with this difficult endeavor.
Meeting the challenges of today’s world in a skillful and aware fashion is not easy. Sometimes another supportive human being can help us to see possibilities that we are not able to perceive on our own. I love my work, and would like the chance to share my skills, as you create a more satisfying and fulfilling life!
